about

母を通してKMD、Digable Planets、Gang Starr、Public Enemy、N.W.A.

On January 1st 2021, like many others, I woke up to the news of the passing of MF DOOM. Immediately I started to listen back through his albums and began reflecting on the world that he came from, which in many ways mirrored a world that I came from while growing up.

I had a very cool mother. In a room full of cool mothers, my mother was still the coolest. In the 80s, whether we lived in the back of my grandfather's shop in Port Moresby, or if she was driving me and my cousins to Paddington Public School in Sydney, she always played great music. I learned about KMD, Digable planets, Gang Starr, Public Enemy and N.W.A through her and since those times hiphop has always felt like home to me.

Listening to DOOM's early albums lead me down a nostalgic wormhole of beat making from that era. I started to go through old Stretch Armstrong and Bobbito radio shows, research the top 100 on the billboard charts from 1989-1999 and generally got obsessed with that world again for a few days while reflecting on my childhood. On January 3rd, I dusted off my old MPC and started to get busy practicing beat making techniques I was hearing all over again while revisiting the history of hip hop, while making music that was just for myself to enjoy. This is the music you hear on 16-BIT NOCTURNES.

Last year I released an album called RAW DENSHI. This album was a big project that took a lot of time and people to make it. In contrast 16-BIT NOCTURNES is just me, usually between midnight and sunrise at my kitchen table making beats while watching documentaries about UFOs, photography and Mike Tyson. It's a very personal album for me, one I'm very proud of. I hope this message gives a little context to how and why it was made.
